Reading Program
Literacy can be a great joy for young children. Literacy provides many ways for children to learn about the world around them. We actively integrate literacy into our classrooms with the Reading Program. We focus on the pre-reading skills needed to become readers.
Throughout the year, we assess different skills to give us an idea of specific areas where the classrooms need to focus. The following are skills we introduce and practice throughout the year.
Concepts of Print- developing book awareness, understanding that printed material provides information, following words left to right and top to bottom.
Phonemic Awareness- rhyming, beginning sounds, ending sounds, syllables.
Alphabet Awareness
Sound Symbol Awareness
Vocabulary and Concept Development- categorizing, positional words
Comprehension- sequencing, understanding store structure
The reading coordinator plans and implements classroom activities in these various areas. These activities assist in learning the essential pre-reading skills in fun and innovative ways. We also look for opportunities to provide families with information on how to keep reinforcing these skills at home since families/parents are a child's most important teacher.
